Over the last few weeks I’ve been busy auditioning for projects left and right. Nothing has materialized, but according to my agent, sometimes it takes awhile to hear back whether you got the part or not.

I’ve been submitting my material for voice overs for national commercials and still nothing. So all I can do is wait and wait.

One of the more exciting things I auditioned for was a very small role in a major motion picture. I doubt that I got the part, but it was quite refreshing to know that the producers saw my stuff and requested me to come in and audition- and they knew up front I wear hijab.

I didn’t try out for American Idol this year because it wasn’t nearby and I didn’t want to ditch my family to go to another city and stay for 2 days on my own dime. It just isn’t worth it. But if X Factor ever comes to the U.S. as I’ve been hearing, then I’ll try to do it. Although the auditioning process seems to be the same as American Idol and to me it’s almost like trying to win the lottery. It all comes down to luck and not talent.

I’m thinking that I need to enroll in some new courses for acting and learning to let go of anxiety. Actually I know I should. My brother was taking some improv classes and he’s way more shy than me. He said it really helps to loosen up and be able to talk in front of people spontaneously. Plus I think I’d like to get into improv and comedy. I used to love Saturday Night Live and would imagine being on the show and coming up with all kinds of characters.

Probably the biggest obstacle for me when it comes to trying out for roles, is that I assume people already have their mind made up about me when I walk in the door with a hijab on. I’ve got to get that negativity out of my head. I know I can do a good job, but if I don’t have the confidence it will show through.

The other obstacle I have to work on, is ignoring that there are people in the room. Some of the auditions I’ve been on there will be 3 or 4 people sitting there staring you down (or at least that’s how I feel lol). And then I kind of get thrown off. I start to worry “oh my gosh I have a huge pimple and they are zooming in on it,” or “Man did I forget a line?” And stuff like that.

It’s all a learning experience and I’m loving every minute of it. But it’s hard work and it makes me appreciate the folks in the business that much more.I’d love to learn more about my favorite actors and how they got to where they are, because I would be surprised if they had extraordinary things happen to them on the way to success.
