Behind the Screen

It’s remarkable how your surroundings can completely affect your mood.

We finally got our carpet installed and (after a week away so my husband could take care of things) I’m happy to be back!

I stayed with my girls at my parents and it was nice to just relax a bit. I was so worried if I wasn’t in Chicago the carpet wouldn’t be installed properly (I realize I’m a bit of a control freak these days!). But thankfully everything went smooth and my husband came to get us and kept telling me how great the apartment looked. Of course I was a bit skeptical. But seeing is believing and it is definitely WAY better than before. I feel like I can finally let loose and enjoy the new place.

Sarah's Birthday Cake

While at my parents we celebrated my oldest daughter’s birthday a little early. It’s actually today! She is a big girl now. Three years old. Wow how time flies! I probably say this all the time, but I still can’t believe I’m a mom. I’m stuck in a time warp for some reason and I keep thinking I’m 17. Maybe it’s because I never thought that getting older meant I could still feel this great about life. I remember seeing women my age now and as a kid I thought they were so old.

I even remember asking my mom, “Were their dinosaurs when you were little?”

Nowadays I get taken aback when kids call me “auntie”. I look around and then notice they are indeed talking to me.

I feel like I’m more mature for sure, but I also feel as though there is so much life has to offer and that I will not give up and act like some frumpy old lady. There are women my age or younger who seem to give in to the whole stereotype that you get married and settle down and just loose yourself. I resolve not to ever let that happen. I want to feel like I’m 17 forever.

It was great when I went back to my parents this last week because I got to hang out with some good friends and just chat and laugh the night away. Of course it did help that I’m an adult now because I didn’t have to check in with my parents when it got late. :)

Do any of you feel like you’re not only young at heart but in mind as well?

  1. Assalamualaikum Maryam! I can definitely relate to that feeling of getting older but still being a kid at heart. Love your spirit and resolve to not let marriage and kids stop you from enjoying life to the fullest.

If you really think abut it, that when u really begin your life as an adult, free to make your own decisions!

May you forever be young Inshallah.

  2. Hi Mariam, Even I too feel young at heart. Im 28 and one day my mom was asking me how old I was cause she gets mixed up sometimes. When I told her I was 28 my sister looked at me and said ugh!! she is getting old. I thought about what she said, and it got me to thinking that yeah soon I will be 30 but I still feel as though time has stopped for me. I feel like 18. Young at heart..My mom is or will be 62 Inshallah and she says she don’t feel old. So I guess you can say we do feel young at heart and in mind!! :-)

  3. To be honest with you I think the thirties are the best so far!

  4. Oh ,and eid milad sayeed ya sarah! That is abeautiful cake, Adeila would be so jealous.

  6. I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels young hehe.

Natalie I’m the same age as you and I too can’t believe the big 3-0 is around the corner.. I always thought by the time I was 30 I’d have like 6 kids and a couple of grandkids lool.

Tanzima you’re right.. it’s time to live it up.. no more rules!! :)

Kelly that’s good to hear.. I’m tired of people who think it’s shameful to be older. We should be proud of our age and the wisdom we’ve achieved :)
Oh and thanks for the bday wishes..

Sarah thanks! I can’t blv you’re in you’re 30′s I still think of you as 23.. time stands still for me even for other people’s ages haha.. I still think my younger brothers are kids when they’re grown up now!

  7. Salam alaikum Mariam,

I too still think I am much younger in mind and spirit, I went to an adventure park with my daughters on Sunday and what fun and much laughter was had by all. I kept up and joined in on all the terrifying heart stopping rides, however Monday morning my muscles and bones reminded me I was 46 (yikes did I suffer lol) so perhaps it is now time to stick to the swings in the play park whilst I wait for my grandchildren to arrive some day (my eldest daughter is trying,Insh’Allah.)

    mmm I wonder if I can….

p.s. Glad to hear all is going well in the new house and you are settling in.

  8. Lol, I’m 30 myself with 1 little boy and I feel the same way. I don’t feel older than 16 or 17 and sometimes I have a hard time believing I’m actually 30 because I think I still dont act or dress like it. like, I always assumed (when I was younger) being older meant looking older, acting mature and dressing mature, but honestly…I still think I have a teenagers soul in a 30yr old body. LOL, plus I dont really “dress” my age…no heels, no makeup, no age-related stuff.
    LOL.

    Yah, its strange.
Plus I dont look anywhere near my age…so that doesnt help. LOL
